Our Story
“ib lounge was set up to pass on the gift of having inspiring teachers that taught me to Understand, Appreciate and Enjoy learning”
As a student,
I often found myself heavily influenced by those who taught me.
If the teacher was passionate, enthusiastic and had a genuine care for his/her students, I tended to pay more attention and do better in the subject.
The converse was definitely also true.
From my schooling years, I realised how important it was to have teachers that genuinely cared and went the extra mile for their students.
These teachers not only taught. They inspired.
And naturally, these usually turned in to good grades too!
I began tutoring after National Service
But found that the place I was working at did not really allow me to truly provide the best help I could to the student.
Students, like all of us, desire a genuine human connection. They needed to know that the tutor cared for their well-being and would go all out to help them in their journey.
In my opinion, the tutors’ job is not just to help the students understand concepts but to really walk the journey with them and show them that learning that particular subject does not have to be boring. It can be applied in the real world and it can be enjoyable.
We personally vet our tutors
And we only select tutors who have a genuine care for their students.
They want their students to do well and will go out of their way to make sure that happens - sometimes challenging me in the process. I love that, because it shows that their students come first.
They would often extend the lesson just so that they make sure their students really understand the concepts.
Young tutors - can they teach?
Being young means that we are more energetic and relatable to our students.
We have walked the IBDP journey rather recently and can empathise with the struggles that they are facing - we also know what challenges are commonly faced by students and can help them tackle it.
We have also done relatively well in the IBDP journey and one common message that I have heard our tutors telling our students is that “they can do it too”.
Through this shared experience, it provides hope and guidance in our students’ journey.
On the more practical side, it means that we are also more familiar with the syllabus and have done tons of questions and past year papers. So, I can say that we are pretty prepared :).
“When you come to ib lounge, you may not be getting a tutor who has years of experience under his/her belt. But what our tutors can provide is something I believe is more important than that - the genuine desire to inspire their students.”
