Why I tutor
As a former IB student, I remember the stress and helplessness of struggling through IB problems that simply wouldn't click. Eventually, I learnt to enjoy finding the patterns in IB questions and formulating strategies to solve them. Now, I find it rewarding to help students understand problem-solving techniques, empowering them with the knowledge of when and how to apply those strategies.
Teaching style
I begin each session by addressing any questions my students have encountered since our last lesson. For Biology and Chemistry, I provide targeted mini-lectures to clarify core concepts, integrating some questions to check for understanding throughout. For calculation heavy subtopics, we work through examples together before transitioning to topic-specific IB past paper questions. This helps students solidify their understanding and memory as well as recognize recurring markscheme patterns. For Math, my approach is 'learning by doing.' If a concept is new, I model the solution first, followed by guided practice where we solve problems together. Finally, I transition the student to independent problem-solving to build the confidence and speed necessary for exams.
Impact on students
Beyond grades, I want my students to feel confident asking questions, articulating their thought processes and taking ownership of their academic journey. I think being a proactive learner is the most valuable skill to have!
